The rougarou (alternatively spelled as roux-ga-roux, rugaroo, or rugaru) is a legendary creature in Laurentian French communities linked to traditional concepts of the werewolf.  French lore says that people become a rougarou if they break Lent seven years in a row. Once transformed into a rougarou, they are cursed to be a blood-sucking monster for a hundred and one days and must feed on human blood daily. The creature is commonly described by “alleged” witnesses as a large, bipedal, humanoid, about 7 feet tall, covered with gray hair, having yellow or red eyes and accompanied by a putrid odor. Other local names for the creature include the rugaroo, Louisiana Wookiee, and The Thing.
