Cornstalk Hotel - what is in a name?

Visitors are intrigued by The Corn Stalk Fence Hotel, a boutique property on Royal Street. It has a varied exterior and a fence sprouting metal corn stalks before it. Tour guides often relay a story that a Midwestern woman ordered it because she was homesick after settling in the city. Not likely. The French Creoles would not take kindly to any American living among them in the "Old Quarter” at that time. The fence was actually ordered from a Philadelphia catalog in the 1870's. A similar one is found in the American Sector of the city.
