Considering the high infant mortality rate and the incidences of yellow fever in the city, death came easily and often in 19th century New Orleans. The many names on doorway tablets before above ground tombs indicate that there are many inhabitants of our “Cities of the Dead.” Each family sepulcher may contain scores of relatives: some contain over a hundred.
