River Road Plantations

Come walk with us through two living history books rich in Louisiana’s storied past - Laura and Evergreen Plantations!

Enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Pontchartrain as you cross the Bonnet Carre Spillway (the flood outlet of the Mississippi River).

Travel back in time to Laura Plantation, an operating sugar farm built in 1805.

  • Laura, a Creole Plantation, offers what has been called “the best history tour in the U.S.”
  • With over 5,000 pages of records, Laura’s archives detail 250 years of true-life stories of the Creole women, slaves and children who lived and worked here.
  • The West-African folktales of Compair Lapin (later known as Br'er Rabbit) were recorded here over 140 years ago.

Tour Evergreen Plantation, the most intact plantation complex in the
South, with 37 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

  • Evergreen, remodeled to its present form in 1832, is particularly distinguished by its double row of 22 slave cabins. It has the country's highest historic designation and joins Mount Vernon and Gettysburg in being granted landmark status for its agricultural acreage.
  • Today, Evergreen Plantation remains a privately owned, working sugar cane plantation.

Notes: Due to the historic nature of both plantations, access to the second floor is by stairs only. No photography is allowed inside Evergreen Plantation home. Walking the grounds is an integral part of
this experience. (Cost for lunch is not included in tour price).
