Guiding Stars!
The first in a series of features on the extraordinary Gray Line Guides.
I love standing in front of one of the houses where Thomas Lanier Williams lived, and explaining that there used to be a streetcar that came up Bourbon St. and down Royal St. The route ended on a street named "Desire." Suddenly, I'll see a look in people's eyes that means, "Oh, now I get it! A Streetcar Named Desire! It's Tennessee Williams!"
During Mardi Gras, we were surrounded by an extremely happy and boisterous women's walking club in fabulous costumes. We stopped, mingled, took photos--and proceeded with our tour. In any other city, it would be bizarre, but it was just another day in the French Quarter.
